On 26 July 2026, during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea, the serial property "Tashkent Modernist Architecture. Modernity and Traditions in Central Asia" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Comprising ten buildings, the inscription marks the first World Heritage recognition of modernist architecture in Central Asia.
The ten buildings were selected from the sixteen sites included in Tashkent's nomination dossier, which was developed through the research undertaken as part of Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI. Together, they represent a diverse range of architectural typologies, including cultural, civic, transport, commercial, and residential buildings, illustrating the breadth of Tashkent's modern architectural development during the 1960sā1980s.
The nomination was evaluated by ICOMOS, the advisory body to the World Heritage Committee for cultural properties, following a technical evaluation mission in 2025. The resulting inscription recognises the Outstanding Universal Value of Tashkent's modernist architectural heritage and its contribution to the history of twentieth-century architecture.
World Heritage inscription marks an important milestone in the ongoing stewardship of Tashkent's modern architectural heritage. It provides an international framework for its conservation and management while reinforcing continued research, collaboration, and the long-term preservation of these remarkable buildings for future generations.
